Crackers?

Ivor

Your email about www.cricketclubsbristol.co.uk copied to some but not all the committee members has been forwarded to me by the Club Secretary. Email is certainly a handy means of communication to multiple people isn't it? It beats the hell out of phoning them all up individually!

I understand you to be saying that you find my website "beginning to become out of date".

Are you completely crackers?

Have you plugged your PC in?

Do you have a working internet connection?

Have you been hitting the bottle?

The whole site has been completely re-vamped, upgraded and added to since the beginning of the year with a huge amount of new text, photos, statistics etc etc loaded onto all its 20 individual pages.

Specifically on latest updates on the pages (and keeping in mind that it has been raining for the last 3 weeks):

HOME - 3rd July is the latest dated post. It is in the nature of home pages that they stay relatively constant so you will not see frequent postings here. Substantial photographic material has been incorporated into historic postings.

Online polls and other features are up there. [note that temporary server difficulties have been affecting display of polls at some times of the day.]

There is also a translation facility. So if you are a native German-speaker and struggle with reading English text, at the click of a mouse you can convert into your native lingo. "Willkommen in Failand & Portbury Cricket Club, bietet eine gute Ausstattung, ein attraktives Boden und jede Menge Möglichkeiten für beide Spieler und Fans" as they say in the Black Forest with their gateau.

NEWS - 27th July is the date of the last post here. The page is crammed with features and news items such as in relation to Neil Harrison and the wasps' nest, with online polls and photos galore. This is despite very little material being supplied to me from club members such as yourself (you didn't spot and report the wasps' nest, it seems) (though certain members including Steve Pursey and Mark Walker are assiduous scribes).

Whatever is supplied goes up.

Every page has recent items on it from June, July and later with videos, text, features and (in the case of the team pages) links to full scorecards.

Material supplied by captains and members is posted up but where none is supplied there is less of it. For example, I don't believe that you have supplied and match reports on the Sunday XI games you have played in. Very little has been supplied in relation to the 2nd XI.

Individual members have been accredited as posting correspondents on many pages e.g. John Skinner on the Sunday XI page. On the 1st XI page Alastair McArthur, Rank Long Hop and Good Length are all listed as contributors as well as Ben Boundary-Creeper who takes most of the photos.

But only such material as these contributors supply can be considered for posting.

In the absence of supply of materials from club committee members or others, I am obliged to rely on the observations of my hard-pressed roving reporters such as Ben Boundary-Creeper, Bino Culars, Thunderbolt and their colleagues.

As Ben says on every page: " I can always be contacted by email at vispavonis@googlemail.com with supportive messages or with new material of all kinds for my review and possible posting on the site. My mission is to keep the world informed about the doings past and present of the people of Horse Race Lane."

SELECTION - Such teams as have been made known by the selectors have been posted up. For the last 3 weeks it has rained and there have been no teams.

WEATHER - A daily up to date forecast over 5 days and next 24 hours appears. Just how up to date were you wanting this to be?

JUNIORS - Only material supplied can be posted and almost none such has been supplied. There are though recent photos of Lyndon Prendergast doing his job on the committee at nets.

COMMITTEE - The dates of next meetings and of AGM and of Dinner are all posted. What other dates do you want up there?

OTHER PAGES - Need I go on?

The only page currently under construction is the INDOOR page on which there will be nothing to put until the winter.

I am not sure what service level commitments you are expecting for the posting of material on the club's site (incidentally about the most informative, most photo-rich, most up to date cricket cricket club site anywhere on the web).

Daily?

Hourly?

Meanwhile, I will certainly be pleased to be supplied with a copy of the telephone and emails contacts list I understand you have been working on this year as per your email.

As you will know, www.cricketclubsbristoI have tried to give you a helping hand by showing on every page of the website: "Ivor Chivers is compiling a comprehensive list of current phone numbers and email addresses for club players, potential players and club contacts. Make his job so much easier by emailing him on ivor@ecosolutions.co.uk with the words: "Ivor, Here's my email address and my phone numbers are (0000) 000 000 and (0000) 000 000". To make it the real deal, add your name at the end!"

I'm sure it's going to be a monster and bang updated.

Subject: Contact List
Good Morning All

Firstly, my apologies that I had to leave just prior to the end of last night's Committee Meeting.

I would confirm that the Players Contact List is available to all Officials of the Club and that I will attempt to work in keeping this as up to date as possible. Your assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

The non-playing contact list I will work on during the closed season and again I will require assistance, particularly from our longer serving members.

I did raise briefly the issue of the Club website www.cricketclubsbristol.co.uk

There was much exchange of e-mails on the above, and at the Committee Meeting held on 12th May 2008, section 19, page 3, it was discussed and noted. It was stated that this website would be an important tool for the Club particularly in terms of communication and raising our profile.

It was also stated that it was important that it was continually up to date but is now beginning to become out of date.

I think it important that we re-visit these decisions made to ensure that these issues do not start to slip back. I also appreciate, from last night's discussions, there are bigger and more important immediate issues to be resolved but trust the website is given consideration, particularly during the playing season, once the problems of unpaid match fees has been resolved.

Regards

Ivor
